Summer is on the way, and for some locations, it feels like it’s already here. That being said, you need to be prepared and so does your equipment! Here are some helpful ways you can keep your equipment running smoothly this summer!
Keep an eye on your tires and batteries.
Tires are weakened by extreme heat which can cause blowouts. Check your tire pressure regularly. Test your batteries to make sure they are still functioning efficiently. They can stop working in high heat. Read more about how to test your starting system.
Check engine belts and hoses.
If the belts and hoses on your equipment have discoloration, it could be a sign of overheating. Check them often to make sure your equipment is in good working order.
You get hot and thirsty during the summer, and so does your engine! Check your equipment to make sure it has the proper coolant and water levels! Also keep an eye on temperature gauges. If it’s overheating, move the machine into the shade and let it sit for a while before shutting it off.
Be mindful of heat advisories.
The hottest time of day is between 10 AM and 3 PM. Not using our equipment during this time can be counterproductive, so try to keep it to a minimum if possible, to keep the equipment, and yourself, from overheating.
Store machinery properly.
If you are unable to keep your equipment in shaded areas or inside, consider a tarp or equipment cover to keep it from overheating. On especially humid days, rust and corrosion can occur, causing wear on your machine.
