Sharing The Road with Wildlife
Cooler weather and shorter days don’t just signal a change in season; they can also signal an increase in wildlife on the road. As we lose an hour of daylight and adjust to changing daylight hours and sleep schedules, early morning and evening travel can require extra attention. Stay alert, take your time and be mindful of unexpected wildlife and other roadway hazards.
Our HSE Safety Specialist provided us with a list of tips to help lower your chances of getting into a car accident.
Wildlife Safety Tips
- Deer and other wildlife are more likely to be active in the early- to mid-morning hours and from late-afternoon through dusk.
- Hunting season can force wildlife out of their natural habitat towards roadways and populated areas. Always scan the roadways for deer.
- Slow down if you are traveling a route where deer are often present or deer crossing signs are posted.
If wildlife crosses your path, your first instinct may be to swerve but that can turn a close call into a serious accident. Brake firmly and stay in your lane. Maintaining control of your vehicle is far more important than trying to avoid the animal at all costs. In some situations, a minor collision with wildlife is safer than a sudden maneuver that could lead to a rollover, loss of control or serious injury.
Wildlife can be unpredictable, but your response doesn’t have to be. Stay alert, slow down and give yourself the time and space to react safely.
